What could a foraging Singapore look like? What did a foraging Singapore look like?

By The Moon and The Tides is an exploration and reimagining of Singapore's relationship with the practice of foraging, perhaps the oldest subsistence pattern of man. Following The Slow Press Vol. 5: BITTERSWEET, this risograph zine will exclusively be launched at SGABF2023.

We spoke to three foragers: self-taught urban forager Esmonde Luo, Syazwan of Wan's Ubin Journal, and Firdaus of Orang Laut SG. Through these conversations, we scrabble to uncover the past, present, and future of foraging in highly-urbanised Singapore.

GAIGAI: A COLLECTION BY THE SLOW PRESS X YABAIYABAI

KODAK GB200 (29).JPG

Inspired by the labour of love and the vibrancy of Singapore's wet markets, GAIGAI is a capsule collection we launched together with textile artist Stacy Tan, known as YABAIYABAI.

Designed by Stacy, the leaves motif featuring the variety of leaves used in cooking and handling of food has taken the form of foldable grocery bags, placemats and coasters, becoming an integral part of our daily lives.

The Slow Press has also coined our own aroma rangers – calamansi, haebi human, and spice girls (ginger, galangal, turmeric). These have been silkscreen printed on canvas pouches, which comes together with a 16-page Aroma Rangers Guide to Gaigai minizine.

Shop our Aroma Rangers pouch + zine sets on The Slow Press store! (the availability of other goods and where to get them will be updated soon.)
